Welcome to Organic Spectroscopy Online

To be a resource for instructors and students in providing a novel approach to the structure and presentation of a course in organic spectroscopy, while also maintaining problem sets with detailed solutions for students currently enrolled in an organic spectroscopy course.

An integrated series of spectra is provided for each compound. All compounds have at least 1H and 13C NMR, FT-IR and GC-MS spectra. For more complicated molecules DEPT-135 and 2D NMR spectra (COSY and HETCOR or HSQC) are supplied.

 

The intent of OSpec Web is to provide solutions (not just answers) to users attempting to solve spectral problems. OSpec Web may be utilized by both students and educators.

How to use the site

The bulk of this site is dedicated to data sets and their corresponding solution sets (there are six sets). The Data and Solution sets are arranged progressively, approximating the presentation timeline of an introductory course in spectroscopy. The Data and Solution sets are accessible from the site's Homepage.

Each data set emphasizes a specific spectroscopic technique. NMR, being the most common technique, is the focus of the first three data sets. Infrared spectroscopy is addressed in data set four, while GC/MS is touched upon in data set five. Data set six covers all of the above with slightly more challenging molecules and also introduces advanced NMR techniques such as DEPT, COSY and HETCOR/HSQC. Thus, each data set covers compounds containing common organic functional groups arranged in order of increasing difficulty.

All spectra presented in the data and solution sets were acquired on instrumentation at Southern Oregon University
